Facebook and Health  By Alim Zaib

Facebook, the most popular social networking site in the world, but it does have side effects. Studies have shown that after looking at their own Facebook pages their self esteem would rise. This was known because each person took the Implicit Association Test before and after looking at their Facebook pages.

The Implicit Association Test is a test that can be used to measure self esteem by pairing self with positive and negative words and people that have a hard time pairing themselves with negative words have a high self esteem. There was a very big gap between the self esteems before and after. This boost means that they will more commonly refer to themselves as positive things than negative. But this self esteem boost also comes with a side effect.

After each person was shown their Facebook profile they were also given a test to count down in intervals of seven and were given questions to answer. After looking at the facebook pages each person didn’t attempt all of the questions because they were all ready thinking of themselves as good so they didn’t need to get a question right to increase that already high self esteem.

This has many uses in the world because if you never show a child a facebook page or any social networking site page that may have an effect on their school work and how productively they complete it. This test does not state that student’s will have worse grades when looking at their facebook profile, it states that people looking at their facebook profile reduces the motivation to do well in a simple task.
