History of Nursing
The very first nurse that was mentioned was by the Romans and she took care of women and men. In Europe from 1600-1800 there were hospitals in Europe but no real proper service. Catholic countries had nurses to do all the medical treatments.
Then modern nursing began in the 19th century in Germany and England and was worldwide by the 20th century. The Crimean War was a huge stepping stone for nursing because when the English nurse Florence Nightingale “laid the foundations of professional nursing”(1). In the United States of America nursing appealed to working and middle class people as an occupation. Also the first public health in America was in Los Angeles and nurses were paid only $1390. At this time nursing was seen as a low class job only done by low class people.
Hospitals were becoming more and more popular in the 1900’s and the government ran some hospitals. In WW1 nursing wasn’t very common and there was only 10,500 nurses enrolled in QAIMNS (Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service)!
Canadian nurses on the other hand started back in 1639. All of these nurses were nuns. The first instance that nursing was used in the military was in 1885 in the Northwest Rebellion. Some of the nurses came to aid the wounded. After WW2 though nursing was nation wide and was called medicare but all countries have one problem, as technology grows the population requires more care.
Military wise Florence Nightingale was a huge factor because she did much in the crimiean war and then Queen Victoria got a hospital built to train military nurses because she saw how useful they could be.
In today’s society nurses are viewed as a very prestigious job and requires a lot of studying unlike 150 years ago. technology has made nurses job’s a lot easier and makes very good money, and anyone can be nurses not just nuns.
